About the course:

Join Niahm Armstrong, experienced violist with the Flagship Orchestra, as she demonstrates the fundamentals of the viola.

Support your students as they learn to care for the instrument and use the bow correctly on their way to performing simple scales and songs.

About the instrument:

The viola is a string instrument that is bowed, plucked, or played with varying techniques. Slightly larger than a violin, it has a lower and deeper sound. Since the 18th century, it has been the middle or alto voice of the violin family, between the violin (which is tuned a perfect fifth above) and the cello (which is tuned an octave below). The strings from low to high are typically tuned to C3, G3, D4, and A4.

Niamh began her musical endeavours singing with the Sydney Children’s Choir from the age of 5, gaining valuable aural training and choral education under the leadership of Lyn Williams. This lead Niamh down her musical path, participating in various other Gondwana Choirs and picking up the violin at the age of 11.

Niamh was a member of Sydney Youth Orchestras’ program for 11 years – from Violinist in the Orchestral Fundamentals Program, to Principal Violist of the Flagship Orchestra in 2018. Niamh has also played in a number of additional orchestras, including the Australian International Symphony Orchestra Institute (AISOI), Danish Youth Ensemble (DUEN), The Metropolitan Orchestra and the University of New South Wales Orchestra and has participated in many regional and international orchestral tours, including SYO’s International Tour to Europe in 2017 and the UK in 2019, and the University of New South Wales’ International Tour to Bona Alit Bali with the Balinese Gamelan Ensemble in 2018.

Having studied a double degree at the University of New South Wales – Bachelor of Music (with Distinction)/Bachelor of Commerce (2014-2018), Niamh went on to continue her passion for instrumental and orchestral education and is currently working as both Violin/Viola tutor and Ensemble Conductor at St Andrew’s Cathedral School, St Aloysius’ College and Summer Hill Public School.

Niamh is very excited to re-join the SYO family as conductor of Stage 1 and Stage 2 this year!
